Call of Duty fans know that when the month of April nears its end, every year, that there’s exciting news on the way. Every year around this time comes the announcement, leaked info, and/or viral campaign that teases the unveiling of that year’s respective Call of Duty installment and 2016 is no different.
Earlier this week a slip-up (or was it?) on the PlayStation Network and in certain retail stores revealed Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare to be the title of the next game from developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision, while also confirming that a bundled version of this release would include a remastered version of the most famous of Call of Duty games and certainly the most notable project developed by Infinity Ward: the original Modern Warfare. Now it’s official.
A change to Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s (last year’s franchise installment from developer Treyarch) revamped fan-favorite Nuketown map featured a giant spaceship arriving at the end of every match, followed by a big explosion and the visual cues of the signal being lost the text “Nuketown Offline” appearing on the screen. It was seemingly set to be revealed through a popular Twitch live stream, with it becoming clear that Activision is teasing the imminent full reveal of Infinite Warfare.
Following that trend, the first official teaser trailer of the game released earlier today (along with news that Activision trademarked Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare) titled “Know Your Enemy” and this odd video, which almost seems ripped out of the FMV cutscenes of classic Command & Conquer, introduces what we can assume is the primary antagonist of the game’s story campaign.
The unnamed, creepy man narrating his evilness to ensure that viewers know that his evil faction will do evil things and celebrate evilness with monuments claims to represent the “Settlement Defense Front.” If we assume the recent report from Eurogamer that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will indeed be set primarily off-world, dealing with space-based factions, that faction title sure fits.
Not all fans are enthused however, and perhaps at this point, that’s the norm within this community. But similar to the Battlefield community in how many longtime active players are clamoring for a return to a historical WWII or modern setting, so to are some COD fans. Instead, Infinite Warfare clearly pushes the brand even further into the future and further away from reality. With there bring three developers working on three-year rotations on annual Call of Duty releases, surely we have to get at least one sub-franchise re-exploring the past, right?
“Make no mistake, we will rip you from the history books. Every last trace of you, gone. You will know loss. We will be the architects of your pain. We will build monuments to your destruction. The whole world will bear witness to this. Our ascension. We will blot out your skies, we will bury you in darkness. Know this and know us. We are your enemy. We are the Settlement Defense Faction.”
Perhaps this game introduces time-travel if that logo that pops up in the viral videos and this guy’s chest is what I believe it is. Call of Duty: Temporal Warfare too on the nose? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments!
