Former A-list actress Cameron Diaz hasn’t made a new movie in years, and fellow actress Selma Blair offers a reason why: Diaz quietly retired. Making her film debut in 1994 Jim Carrey vehicle The Mask, it didn’t take long for Diaz - then a model - to garner major attention from both Hollywood at large and the public in general. While Diaz’s role of lounge singer - and love interest to lead character Stanley Ipkiss - Tina Carlyle did obviously focus a lot on her looks, Diaz’s aptitude for comedy also quickly became apparent, with her playing well off established comedic force Carrey.
Over the course of her 20-year acting career, Diaz would graduate firmly onto Hollywood’s A-list, starring in big hits like There’s Something About Mary, Charlie’s Angels, Gangs of New York, and Bad Teacher. She also voiced Princess Fiona in all four films of Dreamworks’ hugely successful Shrek franchise. In total, films featuring Diaz have grossed over $7 billion worldwide.
Despite that success though, Diaz hasn’t appeared in a film since 2014, that being the Jamie Foxx-fronted remake of the classic musical Annie. Critics weren’t kind to that film, but it did fine at the box office, earning $133 million worldwide on a budget of $65 million. Diaz’s other 2014 projects Sex Tape and The Other Woman also performed well, hauling in well over $100 million each worldwide on budgets of $40 million. Clearly, Diaz still has fans, but according to a recent Metro interview with her The Sweetest Thing co-star Selma Blair, Diaz has officially retired from acting, and seemingly has no plans to return. Here’s her quote:
The now 45-year-old Diaz married Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden in 2015, and based on what Blair says above, is seemingly happy focusing on her home life. While Diaz has never publicly announced her retirement from show business, the fact that she hasn’t made a movie in four years certainly supports Blair’s statements. It’s quite rare for popular actors to truly retire from the game - especially while still young - as unlike many jobs, acting is something one can theoretically do well into old age. With her history of box office success though, Diaz certainly has the resources to never need to work again if she so chooses.
I had lunch with Cameron the other day. We were reminiscing about [The Sweetest Thing]. I would have liked to do a sequel but Cameron’s retired from acting. She’s like ‘I’m done.” […] She has a pretty great life, I don’t know what it would take to bring her back. She’s happy.
That said, one assumes that Diaz could potentially be lured back into acting by a good enough offer. One wonders if said offer will come in the form of Shrek 5, which was previously confirmed as in the works for 2019, with the script being reportedly finished last year. It’s hard to imagine a Shrek film without Diaz voicing Fiona, and it’s also hard to imagine Mike Myers and company wanting to recast the role. Despite Diaz’s apparent retirement, it’s certainly possible that Myers himself could convince Diaz to make an exception for Shrek, seeing as he himself is mostly retired, and has only appeared in two non-Shrek projects since 2009.
