If the renter is the only person listed on the rental car agreement, only him or her can return the rented car. However, if the rental agreement includes another person, most rental companies allow that person to return the rental car on behalf of the renter. In this situation, someone else trusted and responsible can return the car on the renter’s behalf. In most rental companies, the renter and other drivers are listed on the rental agreement form.
Renter’s responsibility
The renter is fully responsible for returning the car in the same condition as when he or she picked it up. This implies that the renter is responsible for repairing the vehicle if he is involved in an accident. If a rental car company receives a complaint from an employee of a rental car facility or if they notice damage to the car, they may hold you accountable for any damages. This means that even if another person drove your car and caused damage, you are still responsible for paying for it.

If this does not occur and there is no way of contacting them by phone or email address provided during booking, then we will charge some amount as an administrative fee (non-refundable) which will be deducted from your credit card on file with the rental car company upon collection of the vehicle from its office or branch office listed on your rental agreement form. Otherwise, unless agreed upon by both parties before agreeing, the fee will not be added.
If there are any tolls incurred while using the vehicle, these charges will automatically appear on the renter’s account holder’s credit card statement.
Return in your name
To your name, you must be the renter. This means that you must be the person who drove the car and signed the rental agreement. In addition to being a renter, this person must also be eligible to drive it (i.e., over 21 years old). You’ll also need to prove that you are capable of paying for damage incurred during your stay with us—you might have a debit card or credit card on file at our office or an account number where we can deposit funds from an automated payment service such as PayPal.
If there is no one else who will return your rental car on your behalf but you’re still set on doing so yourself, rental car companies recommend contacting them directly before leaving town so that they can provide any additional documents needed for proper identification purposes, for instance, passport.
Return under their name
If you need to return a rental car under someone else’s name, it’s best to have them with you. There are some exceptions; If you are renting from Avis, Budget or Hertz and your reservation was made through the Enterprise website or app, they’ll allow you to return the vehicle without an authorized driver as long as there’s someone with a qualified age (over 23 years old) in the car who can sign off on it and has valid identity card. If this is not possible depending on the renter’s situation they provide certain procedures to allow the return of the car.
Can someone else return my rental car?
