Purchase an additional Gamerscore for $10 USD in order to unlock another character slot (up to 4 total) and select almost any combination of characters from the standard keyboard set (except certain combinations like & ‘ < > ). For increased security settings on the Xbox 360 console you may only be able to use letters and numbers, not symbols or spaces.

Change your gamertag by paying the $10 fee to change it at the Xbox Live account management web site (at present only available in the US). The new gamertag must start with one of your current gamertag’s characters followed by a random number. You can also purchase a new name for an additional $9 by selecting Customize > New Gamerscore & Existing Gamerscore when accessing your Xbox Live gamercard on Halo Waypoint. Instead of purchasing additional gamerscore you may choose to purchase a gift card worth up to $100 USD which can be redeemed at the Xbox Live account management web site. Despite being issued by various retailers, a gift card is indistinguishable from cash and can only be used for purchasing items (not services) on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Any amount of money left over after your purchase will not roll over to future purchases. Do not give or sell your gamertag to anyone else – it has been shown that Microsoft will cancel any accounts that are associated with selling gamertags, whether successfully or unsuccessful in doing so. Note: If you purchased Gamerscore for one character slot to unlock a unique gamertag and you later decide to not use this gamertag you can return your Gamerscore to the pool. Proceed as if you were logging in with a child account (see below)

then follow these steps:

  1. Press the Guide button on your controller to open the Xbox 360 dashboard

  2. Select System Settings from the main menu

  3. Select Console Settings and then Memory (on older systems just select Memory)

  4. Highlight any memory unit that has a corresponding gamertag stored, press A on this memory unit, and then choose Clear Storage or Delete All Content & Settings (the option varies by model of Xbox).

  5. Watch “It’s a long way” until it finishes booting in order to fully clear all contents out of system memory

Here’s how:Go to Settings, and then select System.Select Storage.Select All Devices.Select Gamer Profiles.Select the gamertag that you want to delete.Select Delete.Select one of the following:

If you’re changing your gamertag for the first time, you can do it for free. If this is your second change, you’ll be charged a fee that will be taken from your payment method mentioned above.

If someone is already using the gamertag you want, a suffix with numbers is attached to differentiate yourself from other users. Suffixes are subtle but always shown.

Gamertag changes cost money, so if they were free then many people would change them with no regard for how it looks or how well the letters fit together.

The Microsoft account can be assigned to two profiles because it has a secondary email that will help if there is an issue with the primary email.
